Partnership with The Faculty Collaborative, Solve Climate 2030, and Subject To Climate

ViVA’s ongoing partnership with Bard College’s Solve Climate 2030 Worldwide Teach-In initiative continues this summer. Solve Climate 2030, ViVA, and the new nonprofit Subject To Climate are spending the summer preparing a fall 2022 seminar for The Faculty Collaborative on effective teaching about climate change and environmental justice across the curriculum.

The Faculty Collaborative is a consortium of colleges and universities dedicated to professional development. Founded by veteran higher education leader Debra Szybinski, the Collaborative seeks to identify the most pressing issues that confront faculty, explore best practices to address them, and provide expert training and support for their implementation. They offer seminars on teaching and learning and confidential consultation with member institution faculty around the world.

Between 1996-2019, Dr. Szybinski served as the Executive Director of the award-winning and nationally-recognized Faculty Resource Network, a partnership of over 50 colleges and universities throughout the US that provided professional development opportunities for its member institutions, and as Executive Director of the Office of Faculty Resources and the Center for the Advancement of Teaching (2008-2019) at NYU. The membership of The Faculty Collaborative includes HBCUs, Hispanic-Serving Institutions, community colleges, liberal arts colleges, and international colleges and universities. Affiliates include research universities and higher education organizations.

Subject to Climate is a new nonprofit online connector for K-12 teachers of all subjects to find credible, unbiased, and engaging materials on climate change. Subject to Climate first emerged in 2020 from the observations by K-12 educators David Rhodes and Margaret Wang. David and Margaret began to recognize how children were struggling with fear about our impending climate reality. They joined forces with environmental advocate David Jaffe and through support from the Harvard Advanced Leadership Initiative founded Subject to Climate. Their goal is to enhance climate knowledge and inspire action by making climate change teaching and learning accessible to all.

Watch for updates as our collaboration comes together and our fall seminar is announced!
